What is the C1 licence entitlement?

Category C1 is the initial level of training and licensing for LGV (Large Goods Vehicle) driving. A C1 licence represents a progression beyond a standard UK driver’s licence, enabling individuals to operate a vehicle weighing up to 3,500 kilograms, but not exceeding 7.5 tonnes in the vehicle’s gross weight.

Why consider obtaining a C1 licence?

A C1 licence is a great option for those seeking to embark on an LGV driving career. It can assist in securing new employment opportunities as this type of licence is widely sought after by small-scale and local delivery companies.

This type of driver training can also assist businesses in ensuring that their employees receive the necessary training to operate larger commercial vehicles safely and responsibly. We help facilitate business growth by harnessing the power of your workforce and upskilling their driving ability for the benefit of your company.

How to obtain a C1 Licence?

Before you can begin the process of obtaining a C1 licence, you must first hold a current standard driving licence and be over the age of 18. If you meet these initial requirements you can start your application and driver training for obtaining a C1 licence and a CPC card.

CPC Card

If driving an LGV professionally, you will need to obtain a CPC card, which is also sometimes referred to as DQC (Drivers Qualification Card). You will automatically receive this card upon the successful completion of the four modules listed below. A CPC card will allow drivers to legally operate a C1 category vehicle for hire and reward.

Attend a Medical (GP completes DLM1 form)

Before you can apply for a provisional LGV licence, you need to first attend a Medical with a GP. You can choose to do this with your own GP, or alternatively, The Academy can provide a Medical for you in the Mallusk Training Centre, with an onsite registered General Practitioner.

Price is available upon request for this service.

Complete a DL2 form

As part of your application for a provisional LGV licence, you also need to complete a DL2 form. Submit your application with the fee, DL2 form, DLM1 form and both parts of your current licence to the DVA Coleraine, the address is below.
  • Driver Licensing, DVA
  • County Hall, Castlerock Road, Waterside,
  • Coleraine, BT51 3TB
Without this provisional licence, you will be unable to undertake the subsequent modules required.

Module 1 (Theory Test and Hazard Perception Test)

Module 1 requires you to successfully pass two separate examinations that are completed independently of each other. If you fail one part of the test, but pass another, you will only need to repeat that part of the examination.

The Academy has developed an online learning platform to help prepare you for successfully passing both parts of Module 1. It is designed to replicate the tests, so you can anticipate the style and format of these examinations.
Theory Test (Module 1a)
The Theory Test lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes. It is made up of 100 multiple-choice questions and you must answer at least 85 of these correctly to pass the examination.

Test Fee (Payable to DVA) £26.00
Hazard Perception Test (Module 1b)
The Hazard Perception Test will show you 20 video clips, you are required to identify the hazards as they appear on screen. You need to achieve a score of 67/100 in order to successfully pass this part of the module.

Test Fee (Payable to DVA) £11.00

Module 2 (CPC Case Study Test)

This module must be taken in a DVSA Approved Test Centre and you have 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete it. You will be shown 7 case studies and required to answer 6-8 questions per scenario.

Test fee (Payable direct to DVA) £23.00

Module 3 (Practical Driving Test)

Module 3 requires you to complete a Practical Driving Test with a DVA Examiner. This assessment will last for 1 hour and 30 minutes and you will need to demonstrate a high level of competence and safety throughout your drive.

You may be assessed on the following aspects of driving a C1 vehicle;
  • reversing manoeuvres
  • lane discipline
  • maintaining progress
  • uphill and downhill starts
The training instructors at The Academy will provide you with practical support and expert guidance to help you confidently complete this module.

We also have a selection of automatic and manual vehicles available for you to use for this part of the test, depending on the vehicle type you wish to drive. Please note that if you pass Module 3 in an automatic vehicle you will need to upgrade it at a later date if you wish to drive a manual vehicle.

Test fee (Payable direct to DVA) £32.00

Module 4 (CPC Practical Demonstration Test)

Module 4 requires you to answer a set of ‘Show Me, Tell Me,’ questions. A DVA examiner will assess your knowledge in response to the questions, they may be related to pre-use checks, safe loading and handling and vehicle security.

This part of the examination lasts for approximately 30 minutes and you must achieve at least 80% to successfully pass Module 4.

C1 Driving Licence Course Cost

The cost of driver training for obtaining a C1 licence starts at £546.00 (driver training only). However, this price may vary if you wish to add on additional services, i.e.) The Academy Medical, Pass Protection Scheme, etc.

We do not recommend using an HGV/PCV training broker to book your tests as this can be a costly and unnecessary option. The Academy is located in Northern Ireland and all of our training has a local focus.
