Training Overview

What Does the Category D Licence Allow?

A Category D licence allows the holder to drive any bus or coach with 16 or more passenger seats. Combined with a Driver DQC qualification, it enables the holder to drive these vehicles professionally and commercially.

It is the required licence for roles with bus companies, coach operators, tourism providers, and public transport organisations across Northern Ireland and the wider UK.

Any Bus or Coach

Drive any vehicle with more than 8 passenger seats — single-deckers, double-deckers, and coaches.

Full Commercial Entitlement

With Driver DQC, operate commercially for hire or reward — the full professional qualification.

Required by All Operators

Bus companies, coach operators, Translink, Tourism NI, and private hire — Cat D is the universal requirement.

Advanced PCV Qualification

Category D is one of the highest passenger-carrying vehicle qualifications, with Category D+E (Bus and Trailer) available for those looking to progress further.
