What is the D1 + E licence entitlement?
A D1 + E licence allows you to drive a minibus, that does not exceed more than 16 passenger seats and is no longer than 8 metres in length, with an attached tow trailer weighing over 750kg (a combined MAM weight that does not exceed 12,000kg)

A D1 + E licence ensures that you can make the most out of your existing D1 licence. This upgrade to your licence allows you to tow a trailer which can be a great benefit when driving a PCV vehicle. It is also useful for those seeking to enhance their driving skills and gain further employment opportunities.
How to obtain a D1 + E licence?
In order to gain a D1 + E licence you must have an existing D1 licence and be over the age of 18. You do not need to complete a theory test or hazard perception test for obtaining a D1 +E licence, nor undergo a medical.
The process for obtaining a D1 + E licence is a simple practical examination to demonstrate your driving ability. Once over 45, this licence will need renewed every 5 years.

What will the examination involve?
The D1 + E licence examination will include a number of checks in order to assess your knowledge and ability to drive a minibus or caravan with an attracted trailer. Our instructors will ensure that you know what to expect and feel confident in demonstrating your driving ability.

Reversing manoeuvres
Candidates will be required to demonstrate their ability to perform a reversing manoeuvre with an attached trailer. They will need to show their ability to execute the manoeuvre to a high standard, i.e.) checking blind spots, using assistive equipment if required, etc.
Uncouple and recouple the trailer
The off-road section of the test will also require the candidate to uncouple and recouple the tow trailer to the minibus/caravan, ensuring it is securely fastened and unlikely to come apart when driving.
Driving skills
The on-road component of the examination will take place on public roads. Candidates will need to demonstrate a high level of hazard perception, driving skills and awareness of the Highway Code.
D1 + E licence training course
The Academy provides an in-depth 2-day driving course to help you master the skills needed for obtaining a D1 + E licence. There is also an option to add on additional extras such as the Pass Protection Scheme if preferred.Â
